Spotify has officially begun rolling out lossless audio streaming for its Premium subscribers, delivering higher-fidelity sound to music lovers worldwide. The long-awaited feature, initially announced in 2021 under the name “Spotify HiFi,” allows users to stream tracks in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC format, providing a richer and more immersive listening experience.
The addition of lossless audio comes as part of Spotify’s ongoing efforts to enhance its competitive edge in the streaming industry, particularly against rivals like Apple Music and Tidal, which have offered high-resolution audio options for years. Spotify Premium users will now have the choice to access HiFi sound without any additional subscription fees, making high-quality audio more accessible to a broader audience.
According to Spotify, the rollout is gradual, with availability initially limited to select regions before expanding globally. Users will be able to activate the feature through the app’s settings, where they can switch between standard and lossless streaming depending on their preferences and device compatibility.
Industry analysts have welcomed Spotify’s move, noting that as consumer demand for superior audio quality grows, services that provide high-resolution sound stand to gain significant market traction. “The introduction of lossless streaming aligns with the broader trend of audiophiles seeking premium experiences on mainstream platforms,” said a music industry expert.
While Spotify’s standard streaming uses the Ogg Vorbis format at up to 320 kbps, the new FLAC-based HiFi option preserves much more of the original recording’s nuance and detail, offering a listening experience closer to physical media like CDs. This enhancement is expected to appeal not only to casual listeners but also to professional musicians and audio enthusiasts who value sound fidelity.
Spotify’s announcement underscores the platform’s commitment to innovation and user satisfaction, as it continues to expand its offerings beyond traditional streaming. With lossless audio now available at no extra cost, Premium subscribers can enjoy a more authentic and high-quality listening experience, further solidifying Spotify’s position in the competitive music streaming landscape.
