Madurai police have booked three students of a government-run Industrial Training Institute (ITI) hostel in Thirumangalam for allegedly stripping and assaulting a fellow student. The incident came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media and the victim’s parents lodged a complaint with the authorities.
According to officials, the video showed the student being forced to remove his clothes, mocked by his peers, and struck with a slipper on his private parts. The footage triggered widespread outrage and raised questions about student safety and supervision in hostels.
Following the complaint, police registered a First Information Report against three students accused of involvement in the incident. The hostel warden was immediately suspended pending inquiry. Authorities confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine whether there were lapses in oversight and to establish the accountability of staff members responsible for maintaining discipline.
Education department representatives stated that ragging constitutes a punishable offence under state and national regulations. They added that strict action will be taken against those found guilty. The Tamil Nadu government has reiterated that it will not tolerate acts of harassment or abuse within educational institutions.
The case has sparked renewed debate over the effectiveness of existing anti-ragging measures. Parent associations and student groups have demanded stronger enforcement of safety protocols and closer monitoring of hostels to prevent similar incidents.
The Thirumangalam ITI case remains under investigation, with police and education officials assuring that the perpetrators will face legal and administrative consequences.
