ICC Fines Haris Rauf, Reprimands Sahibzada Farhan Over Provocative Gestures in Asia Cup 2025

Haris Rauf gestures at Asia Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken disciplinary action against Pakistan cricketers Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan for controversial on-field gestures during the Asia Cup 2025 Super Four clash against India on September 21. Haris Rauf was fined 30% of his match fees, while Sahibzada Farhan received a formal reprimand.

The controversy arose during Pakistan’s intense encounter with India when Haris Rauf responded to taunts from Indian fans chanting “Kohli, Kohli” by making a ‘6-0’ hand gesture, a symbolic reference to Pakistan’s historical victories over India. Rauf further intensified tensions by mimicking a crashing airplane, a gesture widely interpreted as politically sensitive.

Separately, Sahibzada Farhan celebrated his half-century by mimicking a gunshot with his bat. Farhan later defended the act, claiming it was a traditional expression from his Pakhtun heritage, similar to certain celebrations observed in international cricket. However, the gesture drew criticism for being inappropriate in the context of a high-profile sporting event.

Following a hearing led by ICC match referee Richie Richardson, Haris Rauf was found guilty of breaching the ICC Player Code of Conduct under Level 1 offences, which cover actions that bring the game into disrepute. As a result, he was fined 30% of his match fee for misconduct. Sahibzada Farhan was issued an official warning for his actions. While the ICC acknowledged his cultural explanation, they deemed the gesture unsuitable for international cricket. Neither player was suspended.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had formally lodged a complaint with the ICC, urging action against the players for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), while acknowledging the ICC’s ruling, expressed disagreement and indicated the possibility of appealing the decision.

The incident highlights the intense rivalry and heightened emotions that characterise India-Pakistan cricket matches. It has sparked debate over the balance between cultural expressions, competitive spirit, and maintaining the spirit of the game.

As the Asia Cup 2025 advances, Pakistan and India are set to clash again in the final on September 28 in Dubai. This rematch will not only decide the championship but also test both teams’ ability to maintain discipline under pressure. The ICC’s actions underline the importance of sportsmanship and professionalism in the game’s highest echelons.
