Authorities have recovered the missing gold-plated pedestal (peedam) of the Dwarapalaka idols at the Sabarimala temple, sparking a fresh investigation into a possible larger conspiracy. The pedestal was found at the residence of a relative of Unnikrishnan Potty, a sponsor linked to the temple.
The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) had earlier reported the theft after discrepancies were discovered during routine maintenance of the idol. The incident triggered widespread concern due to the pedestal’s religious and historical significance. Following the complaint, the Kerala Police launched a detailed investigation under the supervision of senior officials.
According to officials, the pedestal was recovered after coordinated efforts involving temple security teams and local police. “The recovered piece matches the description of the missing artifact. Further forensic analysis will confirm its authenticity,” said a senior police official. Authorities are examining whether the theft was part of a larger conspiracy, possibly involving insiders with access to temple assets.
The Sabarimala temple, one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in India, attracts millions of devotees annually. The gold-plated pedestal, used as part of the ceremonial idol installation, holds significant religious importance. Its disappearance raised alarm among devotees and religious organizations, prompting the state to act swiftly.
The Kerala High Court had earlier intervened in the case, directing the authorities to expedite the probe and ensure transparency. Investigators are now focusing on potential motives behind the theft, including the possibility of illicit trade in temple artifacts. Sources suggest that the investigation may expand to include other temple-related thefts and irregularities.
“This is a serious matter affecting not only the sanctity of the temple but also public trust in temple management,” stated a TDB spokesperson. “We are committed to a thorough and transparent inquiry.”
The Travancore Devaswom Board has assured devotees that security measures will be strengthened at Sabarimala to prevent future incidents. Meanwhile, devotees are awaiting further updates on the investigation’s findings.
This incident has stirred debates over temple security protocols and governance, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring of valuable religious artifacts.
