IMD Issues Red Alert as Maharashtra Grapples with Torrential Rain and Flooding

Maharashtra flooding and rainfall

Severe rains and widespread flooding have disrupted normal life across Maharashtra today, forcing school closures in multiple districts and prompting government advisories urging residents to remain indoors and avoid non-essential travel. Cities including Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Thane are among the worst affected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued red and orange alerts for several districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Continuous downpours over the last 24 hours have resulted in extensive waterlogging, road blockages, and traffic disruptions. In some areas, flooding has caused significant damage to property and infrastructure.

In Nashik, rising waters of the Nandini River submerged a bridge at Milind Nagar, while several roads in the district became impassable. In central trading hubs like Saraf Bazaar and Bhandi Bazaar, floodwaters submerged approximately 15 shops, forcing traders to relocate goods to safer locations.

Authorities in Palghar, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Nashik have declared school closures today as a precautionary step to ensure the safety of students and staff. The District Collector of Palghar confirmed the closure following a red alert issued by the IMD. Similar announcements have been made across the other affected regions.

The Maharashtra government has issued advisories urging citizens to stay indoors, avoid non-essential travel, and be prepared for possible landslides, flash floods, and power outages. Coastal areas along the Konkan belt have been warned of rough sea conditions, and fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea.

The IMD forecasts that heavy rainfall is likely to continue for the next few days. Authorities have mobilised relief and rescue operations to assist affected residents, clear blocked roads, and restore essential services as quickly as possible.

Officials emphasise that residents should follow weather updates and heed government advisories to ensure safety during this period of severe weather. The situation remains dynamic, and authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant until conditions improve.
