As the festive season approaches, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an intensive state-wide campaign to ensure the safety and quality of essential festive food products. Named “San Maharashtra Cha — Sankalp Ann Surakshecha”, this initiative focuses on critical items such as milk, khoya, ghee, sweets, dry fruits, and chocolates — products that see heightened demand during festivals. The move comes amid growing concerns about food adulteration during peak consumption periods.
Inspection Drive and Findings:
Since the campaign began, the FDA has conducted inspections of over 1,500 establishments across the state, collecting more than 2,300 samples of various food products for laboratory testing. Initial reports show that 513 samples met quality standards, while 26 were identified as substandard. Four samples had labeling defects, and 11 were deemed unsafe for consumption. The remaining samples are undergoing analysis.
Key festive staples — including milk, khoya, ghee, edible oils, sweets, dry fruits, and chocolates — have been the focus of these inspections. Authorities aim to ensure these items comply with safety regulations, particularly during festivals when demand surges.
Enforcement Measures:
The FDA has stressed strict action against violations. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, offenders face penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offense. This proactive approach is intended to deter malpractices and safeguard public health during the festive season.
Strengthening Food Safety Infrastructure:
To address challenges posed by increased festive demand, the FDA is enhancing its food safety infrastructure. Plans include establishing new testing laboratories in strategic locations and expanding the department’s workforce. These measures aim to ensure faster sample testing and effective monitoring of food products across Maharashtra.
Public Awareness Campaigns:
The FDA is also raising consumer awareness about festive food safety. Citizens are urged to purchase items from licensed vendors, check proper labeling, and report any suspicious products. Educational outreach programs aim to inform the public about the risks associated with adulterated food and promote vigilance during festive shopping.
Maharashtra’s intensified food safety campaign underscores the state’s commitment to protecting consumer health during festivals. By combining robust inspections, strict enforcement, infrastructure improvements, and public awareness drives, the FDA seeks to ensure that festive celebrations remain safe and joyous. Continued vigilance from both authorities and consumers will be essential to maintaining the quality and integrity of Maharashtra’s festive food supply.
