Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali with Indian Navy personnel aboard the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant off the coast of Goa on Monday, October 20, 2025. Continuing his tradition of spending the festival with members of the armed forces, the Prime Minister lauded the Navy’s unwavering dedication and praised the success of “Operation Sindoor,” a recent mission that reinforced India’s maritime strength and national security preparedness.
Addressing the sailors and officers aboard the vessel, Modi expressed his gratitude for their service and sacrifice, describing the armed forces as “the embodiment of courage, discipline, and devotion.” He highlighted that the success of Operation Sindoor demonstrated India’s growing defence capability and the readiness of its forces to safeguard national interests both on land and at sea.
“India’s security forces have always stood as the nation’s shield, ensuring that peace and stability prevail. The achievements of Operation Sindoor are a testament to our soldiers’ valor and to the strength of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the defence sector,” the Prime Minister said during his address. He further emphasized that India was “on the verge of eliminating Maoist terrorism,” noting that the government’s sustained counterinsurgency efforts had significantly weakened extremist networks across the country.
The Prime Minister also interacted personally with the Navy personnel, sharing sweets and extending Diwali greetings to their families. He commended the Indian Navy’s expanding operational capabilities, particularly its indigenous advancements such as the construction of INS Vikrant — a symbol of India’s growing self-reliance in defence production.
Highlighting the Navy’s role in ensuring maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, Modi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing all three branches of the armed forces. He stated that initiatives under “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” were aimed at equipping the military with cutting-edge technology and promoting domestic defence manufacturing.
The celebration aboard INS Vikrant marks yet another instance of Modi spending Diwali with India’s soldiers, a tradition he began in 2014 after assuming office. Over the years, he has celebrated the festival with troops stationed at the borders, in high-altitude areas, and on naval platforms — a gesture widely appreciated as an expression of solidarity with those serving away from home.
The visit not only underscored the Prime Minister’s message of national pride and unity but also reinforced India’s commitment to strengthening its defence infrastructure.
