India Deepens African Ties: President Droupadi Murmu Embarks on Historic State Visit to Angola and Botswana

In a landmark diplomatic initiative, President Droupadi Murmu of India will undertake a state visit to Angola and Botswana from November 8 to 13, 2025. This marks the first time an Indian head of state is visiting these two African nations, underscoring New Delhi’s heightened focus on strengthening “Global South” partnerships and expanding its footprint across the African continent.

The six-day tour begins in Angola from November 8 to 11 and continues to Botswana from November 11 to 13. In Angola, President Murmu will attend the country’s 50th anniversary of independence and address the Angolan Parliament, while in Botswana she will hold bilateral talks and address the National Assembly. The visit signals India’s ambition to deepen cooperation across political, economic, developmental, and cultural spheres with African nations.

In Angola, India sees opportunities in energy, agriculture and infrastructure. The two countries are celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations this year, and New Delhi views Angola as a partner for securing long-term energy and resource cooperation. Meanwhile, in Botswana, discussions will expand into trade, technology, health, agriculture, defence and wildlife conservation — notably the planned translocation of cheetahs under the Project Cheetah initiative.

Defence and mineral partnerships are also in focus. India is engaging Angola for defence modernisation and Botswana for critical minerals linked to India’s energy transition ambitions. Trade between India and Africa is rising, with the African region’s trade volume nearing US$ 100 billion — a figure New Delhi hopes to boost further through these engagements.

The visit is also a reminder of India’s renewed Africa outreach under its “Global South” diplomacy. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the tour reflects a growing Indian focus on Africa across multiple pillars. With Angola currently chairing the African Union and Botswana aiming to diversify its economy under its national Vision 2036 framework, India’s engagement is timed to align with broader continental agendas.

For India, the visit can open fresh gateways for investment, infrastructure partnerships, resource diversification and deeper cultural ties. For Angola and Botswana, the high-level nature of the visit elevates their strategic importance to India, offering platforms to leverage Indian technology and investment. The people-to-people dimension—such as interactions with Indian diaspora communities in the two countries—underscores the soft diplomacy side of the mission.

President Murmu’s state visit to Angola and Botswana marks a significant milestone in India’s Africa strategy, reinforcing bilateral friendship while venturing into new domains of collaboration. The tour’s emphasis on energy, minerals, defence, wildlife conservation, agriculture and trade positions it as more than a diplomatic gesture—it is a strategic push into the African continent’s evolving landscape. As this engagement unfolds, its success will hinge on converting high-level dialogue into sustained action and partnerships that deliver mutual benefits for India and its African partners.
