Ahead of the upcoming two-Test series against India, beginning on 14 November in Kolkata, South Africa’s head coach Shukri Conrad has declared the tour the toughest his side has faced, equating it to their triumph in the 2025 ICC World Test Championship Final. Conrad emphasised that touring India and facing the home side in Indian conditions is uniquely demanding. He said that playing at an iconic venue like Eden Gardens amplifies the challenge, adding that he compares this series to the World Test Championship Final in terms of importance. The coach highlighted South Africa’s strong spin department, including Simon Harmer, Senuran Muthusamy and Keshav Maharaj, as a vital part of their strategy. Given the turning tracks in India and the formidable batting lineup of the hosts, Conrad expressed confidence that his team’s spin arsenal could stand up to the challenge.
South Africa’s skipper Temba Bavuma echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the historic significance of winning in India. The two-match Test series, which forms part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, begins in Kolkata from November 14 to 18 and will move to Guwahati from November 22 to 26. South Africa’s record in India has been poor in recent years, with the Proteas winning only one Test series on Indian soil in the past 25 years and losing seven consecutive Tests across their last three tours. Conrad’s comparison of this tour to the WTC Final underscores the determination within the South African camp to rewrite that history.
By raising the bar and referring back to their WTC success, Conrad has made it clear that the team views this India tour as a defining moment. He described the challenge as “our biggest… certainly in my 20th match,” signalling the weight of expectation placed upon his side.
For India, led by Shubman Gill, the series marks a period of transition with new players stepping up to fill the void left by veterans.
