Delhi Air Pollution Protest Turns Violent at India Gate; Chilli Spray Used, Pro-Maoist Slogans Raise Alarm

Protesters clash with police.

A protest against Delhi’s worsening air pollution at India Gate on Sunday, November 23, 2025, escalated into violence after demonstrators allegedly used chilli spray on police personnel and raised pro-Maoist slogans. The incident has sparked widespread concern, prompting a deeper probe into how extremist messaging surfaced during what was billed as an environmental protest.

Escalation Amid Growing Anger Over Air Quality

The demonstration, organised by citizens’ groups demanding decisive action on Delhi’s toxic air, drew hundreds to the India Gate area. Protesters accused the administration of offering temporary, cosmetic measures rather than long-term solutions to the capital’s pollution crisis. With the Air Quality Index (AQI) hovering in the “very poor” to “severe” range, participants sought urgent interventions to protect public health.

What began as a peaceful rally soon took a confrontational turn when police instructed demonstrators to disperse after their allotted time. Protesters reportedly refused to move, leading to tensions between the crowd and law enforcement personnel.

Chilli Spray Attack Leaves Police Injured

According to officials, the situation deteriorated rapidly when a section of the crowd allegedly used chilli spray—believed to be pepper spray or powdered chilli—against police officers attempting to clear the site. Three to four personnel suffered injuries to their eyes and face and were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for treatment.

Police later detained more than 20 protesters and registered two FIRs under sections related to assault, obstruction of duty, unlawful assembly, and disobedience of lawful orders. Authorities stated that the actions of the demonstrators endangered public safety and amounted to a serious breach of law and order.

Key Charges Filed:

  • Assault on public servants
  • Obstructing police officers on duty
  • Unlawful assembly
  • Non-compliance with dispersal orders

Pro-Maoist Slogans and Posters Under Investigation

The incident took a sharper turn when some participants were seen displaying posters of slain Maoist commander Madvi Hidma and shouting slogans such as “Madvi Hidma Amar Rahe.” Videos from the scene showed banners and chants linking environmental struggles with Maoist ideology.

Officials expressed concern that extremist elements may have infiltrated an otherwise civic-focused demonstration. The presence of Maoist slogans at a pollution protest has raised suspicions regarding the organisers’ affiliations and prompted security agencies to investigate the source of these materials.

A senior officer stated that identifying those responsible for introducing Maoist symbolism is now a key priority, adding that strict legal action will be taken.

Political Reactions and Rising Tensions

The violent episode has triggered strong political reactions. Critics accused the administration of failing to manage the protest effectively, while others claimed that extremist groups were attempting to exploit public frustration over pollution for ideological purposes.

Environmental activists, however, stressed that the core issue should not be overshadowed: Delhi’s air remains hazardous, and citizens are increasingly desperate for sustained, science-driven solutions.
