In a significant push to strengthen India’s road safety framework, the Government of India on Thursday launched the National Road-Safety Digital Dashboard, a unified real-time platform designed to integrate accident data, traffic patterns, and state-level analytics. The initiative aims to sharply reduce road fatalities by enabling data-driven interventions, rapid policy responses, and improved monitoring of high-risk zones across the country.
India continues to grapple with one of the world’s highest road accident rates, recording more than 4.6 lakh accidents in the most recent official reporting year. The new digital dashboard is positioned as a central technological tool to address these challenges by providing policymakers with accurate, timely and actionable insights.
Real-Time Accident Intelligence at National Scale
The National Road-Safety Digital Dashboard brings together data captured through the Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) and Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) systems. These platforms enable on-ground police and first responders to digitally record accident details — including time, location, casualty information, and environmental factors — directly from the crash site.
By aggregating this information on a national scale, the dashboard offers:
- Real-time visual mapping of accidents across states and districts
- Dynamic traffic pattern analysis, identifying peak risk hours and factors contributing to collisions
- High-risk zone and black-spot identification, allowing faster infrastructure and enforcement responses
- State performance benchmarking, highlighting areas requiring urgent attention
Officials noted that the integration of e-DAR and iRAD data will help identify “black spots,” defined as 500-metre road stretches where multiple fatalities or grievous injuries have occurred within a three-year period. With many such segments contributing disproportionately to road deaths, targeted rectification is expected to become significantly more efficient.
Strengthening Enforcement and Policy Planning
The dashboard is expected to serve as a core decision-support system for national and state agencies. Enhanced visibility on accident causes — such as speeding, drunk driving, poor infrastructure, or non-compliance with helmet and seatbelt rules — will allow authorities to plan enforcement drives with greater precision.
Additionally, the tool will support long-term planning by helping officials analyse the impact of safety campaigns, engineering interventions, and behaviour-change programmes. States will also be able to monitor district-wise performance, ensuring greater accountability in road safety management.
A Major Step Toward India’s Road-Safety Targets
The launch of the National Road-Safety Digital Dashboard marks a major milestone in India’s pursuit of safer roads, aligning with national goals of significantly reducing fatalities in the coming years. By enabling real-time cross-agency data sharing, the platform is expected to accelerate the shift toward evidence-based policymaking in road transport and highway governance.
