Self-help organizations are becoming more and more crucial for India’s growth in rural areas. Because of them, millions of women have become community leaders, gotten their money in order, and felt better about themselves when they are with other people. Women often gather together in groups of 10 to 20 to help each other create enterprises that make money, acquire small loans, and save money. They do this to fix problems that have been there for a long time, including being impoverished and not treating women fairly. By the start of 2025, more than 10 crore women from rural areas will have joined more than 90 lakh SHGs. These changes suggest that a quiet revolution is bringing India closer to its goal of progress that embraces everyone.
How SHGs began and flourished in rural India
People who were poor and at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder banded together to help people who don’t have enough money get it. In the 1970s, Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank was the first bank in the world to deploy SHGs. They were a common strategy to fight poverty in India during the Seventh Five-Year Plan. In the middle of the 1980s, organizations like MYRADA in Karnataka came up with the notion of connecting SHGs to banks. In this way, companies could pool their money and borrow from banks without having to put up any assets as collateral.
The government did stuff to speed things up. In 1999, the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana made it clear that SHGs would get help. In 2011, the National Rural Livelihoods Mission was called the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana. NRLM gives SHGs money, training, and makes it easy for them to get to marketplaces. This helps people build enterprises that will last for a long time. These groups now work for the missions that help people in rural areas make money. Kudumbashree in Kerala and Mahila Arthik Vikas Mahamandal in Maharashtra are two groups that have done quite well and can be imitated.
Changes are happening in politics and society.
SHGs do more than only help the economy; they also give women power by going against what people in rural India think women should do. Regular sessions assist women who have been abused by their relationships, drink too much, or marry their children feel better about themselves, learn to read and write, and have the power to make decisions. Joining a club gives women more control over their money and lets them help their communities more. This enables people of both genders get to know each other better.
SHGs get people to vote. Kudumbashree got 300,000 women in Kerala to desire to build their own villages. Many members become leaders of the panchayat and seek to improve schools and roads. Groups teach people about health, hygiene, and school.
Many stories exist about people who have done well. In 2019, Reena Devi from Himachal joined the Gauri Maa SHG and began creating dairy goods to sell to merchants in Shimla. The Gidum Ane SHG in Arunachal made Rs 70,000 by selling crafts and Rs 30,000 by selling other items.
The major program is DAY-NRLM. It gives folks a lot of money to help them live. Money, skills, property, and markets are the four most significant things. When you use it with MGNREGA, PM SVANidhi, and Skill India, it performs better.
Things that keep popping up in the world of SHGs
Things are improved now, however there are still some issues. If you don’t have adequate collateral or paperwork, it will take longer to get a bank loan. You are more likely to fail if you depend too much on the government for aid. When supervisors dispute and don’t keep proper records, people at work don’t trust each other as much.
Families that don’t want their kids to attend to school, caste differences, and teens who drop out of school when they relocate are some of the problems in society. There aren’t many connections in this industry, shipping is expensive, and there are a lot of other firms, which makes it hard to grow. There are still certain ways that areas are not the same.
