Protests erupt in three countries. And then — quietly, days later — investigators confirm it never happened. The city does not exist. The soldiers were generated by an AI model trained on thousands of hours of real conflict footage. The damage, however, is entirely real. This is not a hypothetical scenario for 2026. It is happening now, with escalating frequency, and the world has not yet figured out what to do about it.

AI misinformation has moved from a theoretical threat to an active, documented crisis in the space of a few short years. The same technological breakthroughs that have made artificial intelligence a powerful tool for medicine, education, and productivity have also handed bad actors an unprecedented capability: the ability to fabricate convincing images, videos, and written content at scale, at speed, and at almost no cost. What once required a film studio and a team of visual effects artists can now be accomplished by a single person, in minutes, using freely available tools. The barrier to creating fake news has essentially collapsed.

The conflict zones of the Middle East and Eastern Europe have become particularly fertile ground for AI-generated misinformation. When real events are already chaotic and verifiable information is scarce, fabricated content finds an audience that is primed — by genuine anxiety, by distrust of official sources, by the emotional intensity of the moment — to believe what it sees. Deepfake videos purporting to show atrocities, AI-generated satellite imagery depicting destroyed infrastructure, synthetic audio recordings of leaders issuing orders they never gave: all of these have circulated in recent months, seeding confusion and, in some cases, contributing to real-world escalations.

The asymmetry between how fast fake news travels and how slowly corrections follow is one of the most troubling features of the current information environment. Research consistently shows that false content spreads significantly faster and further on social media than accurate content — partly because fabricated stories are often designed to provoke emotional reactions, and partly because the algorithms that govern what we see are optimised for engagement, not for accuracy. A shocking AI-generated image of a bombed hospital will outperform a measured fact-check every time, simply because shock drives clicks and clicks drive reach.

The crisis isn’t that people are gullible. It’s that the tools for deception have outpaced the tools for detection — and the platforms know it.

Technology companies are under intense and growing pressure to respond more effectively. The criticism directed at major social media platforms centres on a familiar set of failures: content moderation that is too slow, too inconsistent, and too easily gamed; detection tools that lag behind the generative AI models producing the fakes; and a persistent reluctance to take actions that might reduce engagement metrics, even when that engagement is being driven by harmful fabrications. Digital safety advocates argue that self-regulation has had its chance and has demonstrably fallen short.

The tech ethics debate surrounding AI misinformation is genuinely complex in ways that resist easy resolution. Requiring labels on AI-generated content sounds straightforward, but detection is imperfect and bad actors simply strip metadata before posting. Removing content at scale risks catching legitimate satire, journalism, and artistic expression in the same net. Holding platforms legally liable for what users post raises serious questions about freedom of expression that courts in different countries are resolving very differently. There is no single policy lever that solves this, and anyone who tells you otherwise is almost certainly selling something.

What is clear is that the problem will not shrink on its own. Generative AI tools are becoming more powerful and more accessible with every passing month. The audiences most vulnerable to AI misinformation — those in active conflict zones, those with limited access to diverse news sources, those who have already lost trust in institutional media — are the least likely to benefit from detection tools or platform policies designed primarily for English-language content on well-resourced Western platforms. Digital safety, in this environment, cannot be purely a technological problem. It requires media literacy education, international regulatory coordination, and a genuine reckoning with the incentive structures that make the spread of fake news so profitable.

The old journalistic maxim was that a lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth has got its boots on. In the age of AI misinformation, the lie travels the whole way around — and arrives looking like a documentary.
