Hyderabad, May 16, 2025 — As part of the 72nd Miss World pageant’s cultural immersion program, contestants from around the globe are experiencing the diverse traditions and heritage of Telangana. The state, hosting the prestigious event for the first time, has curated a series of activities showcasing its unique cultural tapestry.
On May 13, 109 international delegates embarked on a heritage walk through Hyderabad’s historic Charminar area. The contestants were welcomed with traditional Marfa music and explored the vibrant Laad Bazaar, renowned for its bangles, pearls, and zari work.
The cultural journey continued with visits to Pochampally village and the Yadadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple. In Pochampally, recognized by the UNWTO as a ‘Best Tourism Village,’ contestants observed the intricate process of Ikat weaving, participated in a fashion show featuring local handloom sarees, and engaged with traditional folk music and dance.
At the Yadadri temple, delegates donned traditional Indian attire and took part in ‘Deeparadhana’ rituals, experiencing the spiritual essence of the site. They also joined local women in performing ‘Kolaatam,’ a traditional stick dance, further immersing themselves in the region’s cultural practices.
However, a visit to the historic Ramappa Temple sparked controversy when a video surfaced showing women washing the feet of some contestants. The footage drew criticism on social media, with some labeling the act as inappropriate and raising concerns about cultural sensitivity. Experts have since clarified that foot-washing is a traditional ritual symbolizing respect and hospitality in certain Indian cultures.
Despite the controversy, the Telangana government views the Miss World 2025 pageant as an opportunity to boost the state’s global profile and promote tourism. An action plan has been implemented to leverage the event for attracting international investments and showcasing Telangana’s rich cultural heritage.
The Miss World 2025 pageant, featuring 108 contestants, will culminate in the grand finale at Hyderabad’s HITEX Exhibition Centre on May 31. This marks the third time India has hosted the event, with previous editions held in 1996 and 2023.
As the pageant progresses, the cultural exchanges and experiences in Telangana are expected to leave a lasting impression on the contestants and contribute to the state’s growing prominence on the global stage.
