Pune, May 17, 2025 — The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) commenced the demolition of 36 unauthorized bungalows situated within the blue flood line of the Indrayani River in Chikhali on Saturday morning. This decisive action follows a Supreme Court ruling that upheld a National Green Tribunal (NGT) directive mandating the removal of these structures due to environmental violations.
PCMC City Engineer Makrand Nikam confirmed that demolition operations began at 7 a.m., with the support of police personnel and heavy machinery, including JCBs and poclain excavators. The civic body has prepared extensively for this operation, ensuring compliance with legal protocols and safety measures.
The bungalows, part of the “River Villa” project developed by Jare World and associates under Survey No. 90 in Chikhali, were constructed between 2021 and 2024. Investigations revealed that these structures were built within the prohibited blue flood line of the Indrayani River, violating environmental regulations and posing significant ecological risks. The NGT’s July 2024 order not only called for their demolition but also imposed a ₹5 crore environmental compensation on the property owners.
Residents contested the demolition, arguing that they had legally purchased the plots and were misled by the developer regarding zoning regulations. They also pointed out that the PCMC had provided water and electricity connections, implying official approval. However, the Supreme Court dismissed these appeals, emphasizing the illegality of the constructions and the necessity of preserving the river’s natural course.
In anticipation of the monsoon season, during which demolition activities are prohibited, the PCMC expedited the removal process to mitigate potential flood hazards. The civic body has also issued notices to other unauthorized structures in the area, signaling a broader crackdown on illegal constructions within flood-prone zones.
This development underscores the PCMC’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and urban planning regulations. The demolition serves as a cautionary tale for developers and property buyers to adhere strictly to legal guidelines to avoid similar repercussions.
As the PCMC continues its efforts to restore the ecological balance of the Indrayani River and ensure public safety, the civic body urges residents and developers to cooperate fully with regulatory frameworks to promote sustainable urban development.
