New Delhi, May 30, 2025 — Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Salman Khurshid has expressed cautious optimism about the economic progress in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Article 370, which granted special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir, was revoked by the Government of India with the aim of fully integrating the region into the Indian Union and accelerating its development. Since then, the region has witnessed several government-led initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing connectivity, and boosting the local economy.
Speaking recently, Khurshid acknowledged the positive developments in the region, stating that the removal of Article 370 has opened avenues for increased investments and infrastructure projects. He noted, “The integration has paved the way for sustained economic growth and development, which is essential for long-term peace and prosperity in Kashmir.”
The central government has invested in critical sectors such as road connectivity, power supply, and digital infrastructure, which have started to revive the region’s economy. The tourism industry, a vital source of livelihood, is also gradually recovering due to improved security and infrastructure.
However, Khurshid highlighted that challenges remain, particularly in addressing the political aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He emphasized the need for inclusive dialogue alongside development efforts to ensure lasting peace.
“Development alone cannot resolve Kashmir’s issues; political reconciliation and trust-building are crucial,” he added.
The leader’s comments underline a broader narrative that while Jammu and Kashmir is on a path toward prosperity and integration, sustained efforts in both economic and political spheres are necessary to realize the full potential of the region.
