June 3, 2025 | New Delhi — The northeastern states of India are facing a severe flood crisis as incessant heavy rains have caused widespread inundation, claiming 36 lives and affecting over 5.5 lakh people across Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland.
The floodwaters, primarily from the overflowing Brahmaputra and its tributaries, have submerged thousands of villages, disrupting daily life and causing extensive damage to property and infrastructure. Assam remains the worst-hit state, with multiple districts reporting severe waterlogging and damage to agricultural fields.
Authorities have confirmed that the death toll has risen to 36, with many casualties resulting from drowning, landslides, and collapsing structures. Over 5.5 lakh individuals have been displaced, many of whom are currently housed in relief camps managed by state governments and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
The government has mobilized additional resources to support rescue and relief operations. NDRF teams are conducting evacuation drives and distributing essential supplies such as food, clean water, and medicines to affected populations. State administrations have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and move to safer locations as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued heavy rainfall over the next few days.
Experts have pointed to longstanding challenges in flood management in the region, including weakened embankments, deforestation, and unplanned urbanization, which have exacerbated the impact of natural flooding. Calls for improved infrastructure resilience and sustainable flood mitigation measures are growing louder in the wake of the disaster.
With the monsoon season still underway, officials warn that the situation may deteriorate further unless preventive steps are urgently taken. The floods have not only caused loss of life but also threatened agricultural production and local economies, making immediate and coordinated action vital.
