Ukraine has confirmed a successful strike on a strategic bridge linking Crimea to Russian-occupied southern Ukraine, using underwater drones loaded with explosives. The attack marks a significant development in Ukraine’s military operations, targeting key Russian infrastructure to disrupt supply routes.
The Chonhar Bridge, located between Crimea and the Kherson region, was hit late Monday night. According to Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) were deployed to carry out the strike, damaging a critical segment of the bridge. The agency stated that the mission aimed to “undermine Russia’s military logistics and limit troop mobility.”
Russian authorities acknowledged the attack but claimed the structure remains partially operational. Russian Defense Ministry officials have condemned the strike and warned of retaliation. “This act will not go unanswered,” said a ministry spokesperson during a televised statement.
The Chonhar Bridge has served as a vital land corridor for the movement of Russian military equipment and personnel since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Ukrainian officials view such infrastructure as legitimate military targets, especially as they are used to support continued occupation.
“This is part of a broader strategy to disrupt the enemy’s supply chain,” a Ukrainian defense source said. “Any infrastructure aiding the illegal occupation of our territory is subject to precision strikes.”
