Rainfall Returns to Pune, IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Thunderstorm Activity

Pune, June 5, 2025 — Following weeks of dry and warm conditions, Pune witnessed a welcome change in weather as scattered showers made a return to the city. In its latest update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune and nearby regions, warning of potential thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next few days.

According to IMD authorities, isolated parts of the district may experience moderate to heavy rainfall, especially during evening hours. The yellow alert, which is an early warning level, advises residents to stay aware of possible weather-related disruptions, including waterlogging, power outages, and traffic congestion.

The IMD has linked the sudden shift in weather to advancing southwest monsoon currents and the formation of a low-pressure system near the Arabian Sea coast. These conditions are enhancing pre-monsoon activity across central Maharashtra, including Pune.

“Wind speeds may range between 40 to 50 kilometers per hour during thunderstorms,” said an IMD spokesperson. “People are urged to take safety precautions, avoid open areas during lightning, and follow local advisories.”

On Wednesday, brief but intense spells of rain were recorded in several parts of the city, including areas such as Baner, Katraj, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The rainfall helped bring down the day’s temperature, offering temporary relief from the heat. However, it also caused traffic delays and minor flooding in some low-lying zones.

In response to the alert, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has activated its disaster management units and has intensified cleaning operations in drainage lines to prevent clogging. Officials have urged citizens to report any rain-related emergencies using the PMC’s helpline and mobile app.

Farmers in the region, particularly in the rural talukas of Purandar and Daund, have welcomed the showers. Agricultural experts noted that while the rainfall may assist in early-stage sowing preparations, widespread and consistent monsoon rainfall will still be necessary for sustained agricultural activities.

“The rainfall is encouraging, but farmers are advised not to rush into sowing until conditions stabilize further,” said an official from the state agriculture department.

The IMD anticipates further rain activity over the next 72 hours, with chances of stronger showers as the monsoon advances. Meteorologists suggest that the formal onset of monsoon in Pune may occur earlier than usual if current conditions persist.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious during this transition period and stay updated with real-time weather forecasts. Commuters are advised to plan travel accordingly, and vulnerable groups are encouraged to remain indoors during adverse weather conditions.
