New Delhi, June 5, 2025 — The Gareeb Kalyan Yojana (GKY), a flagship welfare initiative of the Government of India aimed at poverty alleviation and social upliftment, today completed 11 years since its launch in 2014. Over the past decade, the scheme has significantly contributed to improving the socio-economic conditions of millions of underprivileged families across the country.

Designed to provide comprehensive support to the marginalized and economically weaker sections, the Gareeb Kalyan Yojana offers a range of benefits including direct cash transfers, free food grain distribution, healthcare services, and skill development programs. The initiative has been particularly instrumental in providing relief during crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, by ensuring timely assistance to vulnerable populations.

According to official data, the scheme has benefited more than 20 crore individuals nationwide, including daily wage earners, small farmers, women-led households, and senior citizens. One of the scheme’s key components, the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY), has distributed free essential food grains, playing a vital role in combating hunger and malnutrition.

A Ministry of Rural Development spokesperson stated, “Gareeb Kalyan Yojana remains a cornerstone of our efforts to ensure inclusive growth. We are committed to leveraging technology to improve transparency and efficiency in the delivery of benefits under this scheme.”

Despite notable progress, challenges remain in extending the scheme’s reach to remote and tribal areas, as well as enhancing beneficiary awareness. Experts recommend increased funding and enhanced community participation to address these gaps.

Looking forward, the government plans to broaden the scope of Gareeb Kalyan Yojana by integrating climate-resilient agriculture initiatives and further aligning the program with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As the scheme marks its 11th anniversary, officials reiterate their commitment to strengthening social security nets and empowering the nation’s poorest citizens.
