PUNE, June 5 — The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has launched a large-scale land acquisition initiative to facilitate the construction of 150 new roads across the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR). The move is part of a major infrastructure expansion plan aimed at improving connectivity, reducing traffic congestion, and supporting urban development in the fast-growing region.
According to PMRDA officials, the land acquisition will cover over 2,000 hectares across several key areas, including Hinjewadi, Wagholi, Hadapsar, Chakan, and Talegaon. The new roads are planned to connect residential areas, industrial zones, and major highways, aligning with future projects like the Pune Ring Road and the Pune-Nashik Industrial Corridor.
The authority has already begun the process of issuing preliminary notices to landowners and conducting joint measurements in affected talukas. Compensation will be provided under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
“This is a critical project that will improve regional connectivity and address growing transportation challenges in the Pune Metropolitan Region,” a senior PMRDA official said. “We are taking steps to ensure a transparent acquisition process and adequate compensation for landowners.”
The project is expected to boost the real estate and industrial sectors by improving road access to major commercial and logistics hubs. Analysts have noted that better infrastructure could attract more investment to the region and enhance its status as a key economic center in Maharashtra.
However, the land acquisition drive has drawn concerns from environmental groups and local residents. Critics have called for environmental impact assessments and public consultations to ensure that the development does not adversely affect ecosystems or displace communities without proper rehabilitation.
In response, PMRDA has assured that all legal and environmental procedures will be followed. Officials stated that the new road designs will incorporate sustainable features, including green corridors and cycling tracks, to promote eco-friendly urban growth.
The road development initiative will be implemented in phases, with work expected to begin in high-priority zones over the coming months. The authority plans to release a detailed project timeline and progress updates periodically.
The PMRDA’s land acquisition drive is being viewed as a transformative step in the region’s infrastructure strategy. With proper execution, the project is expected to significantly improve mobility, reduce travel times, and support the long-term growth of Pune and its surrounding areas.
