Chamba, Himachal Pradesh — June 9, 2025:
A wedding video shared online by a couple from Indore has inadvertently triggered a gold rush in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, eventually leading to the brutal murder of a young man. The bizarre turn of events has prompted local authorities to issue warnings and initiate a criminal investigation, while raising nationwide concerns over the influence of social media-driven misinformation.
According to officials, the incident began when a short video of the couple’s wedding and honeymoon trip went viral on social media. In one clip, the couple was seen throwing flowers into the air amidst a scenic hillside in Chamba. Viewers misinterpreted the glinting particles in the background as gold dust, sparking widespread speculation that a hidden gold deposit had been discovered.
Within days, dozens of treasure seekers from various states — including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh — descended on the area, illegally digging in forested lands without permission. Local authorities reported extensive damage to the natural habitat and disruption of wildlife in the region.
The situation escalated dramatically on Sunday, when the body of a 26-year-old man from Haryana was found near the makeshift camps. Police confirmed that the victim had suffered multiple blunt force injuries. Initial investigation suggests the murder may have stemmed from a dispute over digging territory or possession of suspected gold particles.
Superintendent of Police (Chamba) Abhishek Yadav stated that three individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the murder. “This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers of misinformation. What began as a social media trend has ended in violence and loss of life,” he said.
The Indore couple, upon learning about the aftermath of their viral video, expressed deep regret. They clarified that the sparkling visuals were simply sunlight reflections caught on camera and had no connection to any precious metals. “We never imagined a beautiful memory from our honeymoon would turn into something so tragic,” the groom said in a statement to local reporters.
Forest authorities have since cordoned off the area and are working to restore the damaged landscape. The Himachal Pradesh government is now considering tighter regulations and monitoring of viral social media content, especially that which may incite public unrest or spread false claims.
Police have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information and warned that legal action may be taken against individuals spreading misleading content.
The incident has sparked national debate on the responsibility of social media users and the need for digital literacy to prevent such tragedies in the future.
