In a significant stride towards strengthening its strategic defence capabilities, India is set to conduct a critical test of its first indigenously developed hypersonic cruise missile with a range of 1,500 kilometers. This advanced missile, developed under a top-secret initiative involving the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), marks a major technological leap in India’s military arsenal, placing it among a select group of nations with hypersonic capabilities.
The missile, expected to be launched in the coming weeks, has been designed to travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5 — more than five times the speed of sound. According to defence officials, the new hypersonic cruise missile incorporates cutting-edge technologies, including scramjet propulsion, enhanced stealth features, and precision guidance systems, making it highly survivable against modern air defence systems.
This advanced platform will significantly boost India’s strategic deterrence, particularly in the context of the growing regional tensions with China and Pakistan. Sources suggest that the missile system is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear warheads, offering the Indian Armed Forces a critical edge in terms of rapid and precise long-range strike capability.
Defence analysts believe that the missile test is part of India’s broader effort to counterbalance China’s recent advances in hypersonic weaponry. The Chinese military has reportedly already inducted hypersonic glide vehicles such as the DF-ZF, and India’s upcoming test underscores its resolve to maintain technological parity in this emerging arena of warfare.
While the DRDO has not officially disclosed the name of the new missile, insiders refer to it as part of the HSTDV (Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle) program, which had its initial success in 2020. The upcoming test is expected to validate operational capability and readiness for potential induction into the armed forces.
The move also reflects India’s growing emphasis on indigenisation and self-reliance in defence manufacturing, in line with the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently lauded DRDO’s consistent efforts in developing next-generation technologies that contribute to national security and global strategic stature.
