Toronto, June 12 – Canadian authorities have arrested seven Indian-origin men in connection with a large-scale drug smuggling operation that allegedly exploited commercial trucking routes between the United States and Canada. The multi-agency investigation has also uncovered possible links between the accused and anti-India activities abroad.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the suspects were operating a sophisticated narcotics trafficking network using commercial transport vehicles to move large quantities of drugs across the US-Canada border. The substances include cocaine, methamphetamine, and opioids, which were intercepted during raids conducted in Ontario.
Officials stated that the group leveraged their roles in the trucking and logistics sectors to smuggle drugs without detection. Investigators recovered significant amounts of illicit substances, large sums of cash, encrypted communication devices, and documents pointing to international criminal associations.
Preliminary findings suggest that the network may have ties to individuals or entities engaged in anti-India activities, though authorities have not yet confirmed any specific organizations. Sources indicate that some of the accused had previously participated in events supporting pro-Khalistan causes. Authorities are now examining whether drug proceeds were used to finance separatist movements or anti-India propaganda.
“The investigation has revealed troubling signs of potential links between organized crime and extremism,” an RCMP spokesperson said. “Further analysis of financial transactions and digital communications is underway.”
The Indian government has expressed concern over the developments and is seeking details through diplomatic channels. Officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs are monitoring the situation closely and have underscored the need for cooperation in addressing transnational threats.
This case comes amid strained diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Ottawa over Canada’s handling of extremist elements operating under the guise of political activism. India has repeatedly called for stronger action against groups promoting violence and separatism targeting Indian interests.
Law enforcement agencies in both countries are expected to enhance intelligence-sharing as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, Canadian authorities have not ruled out additional arrests or charges as they continue to dismantle the network.
The seven men are currently in custody and are expected to face multiple charges related to drug trafficking, conspiracy, and potential violations of national security laws. Further hearings are scheduled in the coming weeks.
