June 16 — Blaise Metreweli has been appointed as the next Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), becoming the first woman in British history to lead the United Kingdom’s foreign intelligence agency.
The official announcement was made on Friday by government sources, confirming that Metreweli will take over from current MI6 head Sir Richard Moore later this year. Her appointment marks a historic moment for the agency, which has operated for more than a century under male leadership.
Metreweli has served in the British intelligence community for over 30 years, with extensive experience in global security operations, cyber intelligence, and counterterrorism. While details of her career remain classified due to the nature of her work, she is known for her strategic contributions to major international operations and her leadership within the agency.
Educated at the University of Cambridge, Metreweli is fluent in several languages and has worked closely with international partners, including the United States and other allies in the Five Eyes intelligence network. Her appointment is seen as a reflection of her deep operational expertise and her ability to lead in a rapidly changing global threat environment.
Metreweli’s selection also marks a significant step forward in terms of diversity and representation within the UK’s security services. While MI5 was previously headed by Dame Stella Rimington in the 1990s, this is the first time a woman has been chosen to lead MI6 since its establishment in 1909.
Security analysts say Metreweli’s appointment comes at a critical time. As MI6 faces increasingly complex global challenges—ranging from cyber warfare and artificial intelligence to escalating geopolitical tensions—her experience and leadership will be key to shaping the agency’s strategic direction.
“Her appointment demonstrates a clear commitment to modernising the intelligence service and ensuring it reflects the values and capabilities of contemporary Britain,” said one senior government official familiar with the selection process.
Metreweli is expected to prioritise strengthening MI6’s technological capabilities, enhancing international collaboration, and maintaining the UK’s strategic edge in intelligence gathering. Her leadership is also anticipated to support the agency’s efforts to become more transparent and adaptable in response to public scrutiny and evolving threats.
She will formally assume the role later this year following the retirement of Sir Richard Moore, who has led the agency since 2020.
