The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of coastal Karnataka, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. The alert covers Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts, with Mangaluru already witnessing intense downpours leading to severe flooding and waterlogging.

The IMD has predicted rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm due to intensified monsoon activity over the Arabian Sea. Low-lying areas in Mangaluru, including Pumpwell, Kankanady, Bunder, Hampankatta, and Jeppinamogaru, were inundated on Monday morning, paralyzing daily life and disrupting vehicular traffic. The city’s drainage system was overwhelmed, and several roads remained submerged, forcing residents to remain indoors.

In response, the Dakshina Kannada district administration declared a holiday for schools and colleges, while emergency teams from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and disaster response units were deployed to tackle the crisis. Control rooms have been activated, and helplines set up to assist citizens.

Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan stated that all necessary precautions were being taken. “Rescue teams have been stationed in flood-prone zones, and we urge residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. We are monitoring water levels of rivers and vulnerable slopes.”

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has warned of possible landslides in ghat sections including Charmadi and Shiradi, and rising water levels in rivers Nethravathi and Gurupura have triggered alerts in Bantwal, Belthangady, and adjoining taluks. Locals in low-lying and riverbank areas have been asked to remain vigilant and prepared for possible evacuations.

Public transport, particularly KSRTC services in hilly regions, has been partially suspended due to road blockages and safety concerns. Power outages have been reported in some parts of Mangaluru, and local businesses faced shutdowns as water entered shops and commercial complexes.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reviewed the situation and directed officials to provide timely assistance. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding lives and ensuring that relief operations reach all affected households. Instructions were also given to assess property damage and offer compensation to those impacted.

The IMD has further cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions and strong winds. The forecast suggests that the region may continue to experience intense rainfall till mid-week.

As Mangaluru and surrounding coastal areas brace for more rain, the district administration, municipal bodies, and disaster response teams remain on high alert. Citizens have been requested to follow weather updates from official sources and reach out to helplines in case of emergencies.
