WhatsApp Rolls Out Ads in Status, Paid Channel Subscriptions, and Promotions in Major Update

June 17, 2025 — WhatsApp, the popular Meta-owned messaging platform, has announced a series of major updates aimed at transforming the user experience and expanding monetization options. In its latest rollout, WhatsApp has introduced advertisements in the Status section, paid subscriptions for channels, and promotional tools for content creators — all integrated into the app’s Updates tab.

With over 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp is now venturing into monetization strategies similar to those adopted by its sister platforms, Facebook and Instagram. These updates mark a significant shift from WhatsApp’s historically ad-free and privacy-focused environment.

According to the company, the Status feature — WhatsApp’s version of stories — will now host short, skippable ads between user updates. The ad placements are designed to be minimally intrusive while offering brands a new space to engage users. This is the first time WhatsApp is allowing advertisements within its core user experience.

In another major move, WhatsApp is introducing paid subscriptions for channels, a feature that allows content creators, influencers, and organizations to charge users for exclusive access. Channel owners can now offer premium content, such as early announcements, behind-the-scenes posts, or subscriber-only updates. The feature is expected to benefit media houses, influencers, and public figures looking to monetize their broadcast content on the platform.

Additionally, WhatsApp is rolling out promotional tools to help channel owners boost their visibility and grow their subscriber base. Similar to Instagram’s “Boost Post” feature, this promotion option will allow users to pay for increased reach directly within the app. These tools are aimed at helping creators expand their audiences organically and through targeted promotions.

All of these changes are being housed within the Updates tab, which already includes Status and Channels. Meta stated that this redesign is intended to streamline non-chat activity and create a centralized hub for discovery, subscriptions, and commercial engagement.

Despite the shift towards monetization, WhatsApp has assured users that their privacy remains a top priority. The company confirmed that all personal messages will remain end-to-end encrypted and that no advertisements will be shown in private chats.

The global rollout of these features has already begun and will be completed in phases over the coming months. With this strategic update, WhatsApp is not only evolving into a content and commerce platform but also positioning itself to compete more directly with platforms like Telegram and Snapchat, which have already implemented similar monetization features.

These developments are seen as part of Meta’s broader strategy to unlock new revenue channels across its family of apps, particularly in markets where WhatsApp is a dominant communication tool.
