Indian Railways Hikes Passenger Train Fares, New Rates Effective from July 1

Indian Railways fare hike

June 25, 2025: In a move affecting millions of daily commuters, the Indian Railways has announced a hike in passenger train fares, which will come into effect from July 1, 2025. The fare revision applies to both reserved and unreserved passenger trains across various categories, excluding suburban rail services.

According to an official release from the Ministry of Railways, the fare increase has been implemented to counter rising operational costs and fuel expenses, and to improve service quality and passenger amenities. The last comprehensive fare revision for passenger trains was carried out several years ago.

As per the new fare structure:

  • Unreserved class fares will increase by ₹2 to ₹5 depending on the distance.
  • Sleeper class (reserved) fares will see a hike of ₹10 to ₹20.
  • AC classes, including AC Chair Car and AC 3-tier, will witness an increase between ₹20 and ₹50, based on the route and class.

Railway officials clarified that suburban train services—primarily operating in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata—will remain unaffected by the hike. There is also no immediate change in fares for premium trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, and Duronto.

A Railway Board spokesperson said, “The fare revision is a necessary step to ensure sustainable operations, enhance cleanliness, and upgrade infrastructure. The additional revenue will be reinvested into improving the passenger experience and safety measures.”

The Railways is also introducing a dynamic fare system on selected high-demand routes, which will allow flexible pricing based on demand, similar to airline ticketing models. This move is aimed at better managing peak-time congestion and optimizing revenue.

Public reactions have been mixed. While some passengers expressed concern over the added burden, others acknowledged the importance of investing in better services. Passenger rights groups have urged the government to offer concessions for senior citizens, students, and low-income groups to minimize the financial impact on vulnerable sections.

Transport analysts noted that even with the revised fares, Indian Railways continues to offer one of the most economical transportation options in the world. The government has also indicated plans to roll out new travel subsidy schemes in the coming months.

With the new fare structure set to roll out on July 1, Indian Railways aims to strike a balance between affordability and the need for modernization, while continuing its journey toward becoming a safer and more efficient transportation network.
