River Rafting Suspended in Rishikesh as Ganga Nears Flood Warning Level

Ganga flood warning

June 26, 2025:
All river rafting activities in Rishikesh have been suspended until further notice as the water level of the Ganga river approaches the official warning mark. The decision, taken by local administration and disaster management authorities, follows continuous heavy rainfall in the upper Himalayan region and increased water inflow from upstream.

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the Ganga is flowing dangerously close to the flood warning level at various monitoring stations in Rishikesh and Haridwar. Officials have stated that the situation is being monitored round the clock, and precautionary measures are in place to ensure public safety.

The Tehri Dam authorities have also increased surveillance, and controlled water release operations are being conducted to manage downstream flow. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in sensitive areas, while local police and municipal bodies are issuing alerts to prevent people from going near the riverbanks.

District Magistrate Yamuna Nand Tiwari issued an advisory on Wednesday urging tourists and locals to avoid water-related activities, including rafting, bathing, and camping near the river. “In light of the rising water levels and unpredictable weather conditions, rafting operations are being suspended as a preventive step,” the advisory stated.

Tour operators in Rishikesh have acknowledged the administration’s directive and are cooperating with the ban. Many rafting campsites have already been vacated, and tourists have been shifted to safer areas. “Safety is our top priority. We understand the risks and are in full support of the government’s decision,” said Rajesh Rawat, a local rafting operator.

The suspension has come at the peak of the tourist season, affecting dozens of adventure sports businesses. However, officials have reiterated that public safety takes precedence over commercial activities, especially during the monsoon season.

Meteorological reports indicate that heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the next few days in parts of Uttarakhand, particularly in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pauri districts. Authorities have also warned of possible landslides in hilly terrains and have advised residents to stay alert and follow official instructions.

As the Ganga nears the danger level, the situation remains critical. The administration is closely coordinating with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), disaster relief forces, and dam authorities to manage water flow and minimize risks.

The Uttarakhand government has urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant and report any emergency to local helplines. Updates will continue to be issued through official channels as the situation develops.
