Lakhs of Devotees Gather in Puri for Rath Yatra 2025; Odisha Government Implements Extensive Measures

Rath Yatra 2025

The sacred city of Puri turned into a sea of devotion on Friday as the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath commenced with spiritual grandeur. Pilgrims from across India and overseas assembled in large numbers to witness the centuries-old festival, as Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra embarked on their ceremonial procession from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple.

The Rath Yatra 2025, a prominent event in the Hindu calendar, began early in the morning with traditional rituals and religious chants echoing along the Grand Road (Bada Danda). The three deities were placed on grand wooden chariots, intricately designed and constructed by skilled artisans, and were ceremoniously pulled by thousands of devotees.

In view of the massive turnout, the Odisha government had made elaborate arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of the event. More than 10,000 security personnel were deployed across the city. Surveillance systems, including drones and CCTV cameras, were in place to monitor crowd movement and enhance safety.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had reviewed preparations ahead of the Yatra and assured the public of coordinated efforts by various departments. “Every measure has been taken to ensure the comfort, safety, and spiritual experience of the devotees,” he had stated.

To handle medical emergencies, over 100 ambulances, mobile medical teams, and temporary health camps were stationed along the procession route. Drinking water stations, rest zones, and sanitation units were set up at multiple points to support the large gathering.

The traditional “Chhera Pahanra” ritual, in which the ceremonial king of Puri sweeps the chariot platforms with a golden broom, was performed with full devotion, symbolising humility and the spiritual equality of all.

In a first for the festival, the state introduced digital tools such as a live-streaming platform and a dedicated mobile application offering real-time updates, maps, and safety alerts. These tech-enabled features allowed global devotees to virtually participate in the celebrations.

Cultural programmes, including classical dance performances and devotional music, were organised by the state’s tourism and cultural departments to highlight Odisha’s artistic heritage during the festival.

Officials reported that the crowd remained peaceful and cooperative throughout the day. Volunteers and support teams worked on the ground to manage foot traffic and assist pilgrims with directions, first aid, and lost-and-found services.

The return journey of the deities, known as Bahuda Yatra, will take place after a nine-day stay at the Gundicha Temple, with similar safety and service arrangements in place.

This year’s Rath Yatra in Puri has once again demonstrated the deep religious significance of the festival and the successful coordination between spiritual tradition and modern administration.
