Starting July 7, 2025, the management of the Ekvira Devi Temple, a prominent pilgrimage destination near Lonavala, will begin enforcing a formal dress code for all visitors. The initiative aims to uphold religious decorum and foster a respectful atmosphere within the temple premises.
As per the newly announced guidelines, devotees will be required to wear traditional Indian clothing during their visit. Men are expected to wear full-length garments such as kurtas with pajamas or trousers, while women must be dressed in sarees, salwar kameez, or similar modest attire. Outfits deemed inappropriate—such as shorts, sleeveless tops, or torn jeans—will not be allowed.
Temple authorities stated that the move comes in response to repeated concerns about casual or inappropriate dressing by some visitors, which they believe undermines the sanctity of the temple. The decision is part of a broader effort to reinforce traditional values and respect for sacred spaces.
A representative from the temple trust explained, “The Ekvira Devi Temple holds deep cultural and religious significance. To maintain a spiritual environment and show reverence to the deity, it’s important that devotees dress appropriately. The new guidelines are intended to preserve that sense of devotion.”
Located near the historic Karla Caves, the Ekvira Devi Temple attracts thousands of pilgrims each year, especially from the Koli community and other devotees who consider the goddess their ancestral deity. The temple experiences peak crowds during major festivals like Navratri and Chaitra Navratra, prompting the trust to implement stricter visitor protocols.
To ensure smooth implementation, temple staff and volunteers will assist devotees at the entrance by providing information about the dress code. Temporary cover-ups will also be available at nominal rates for those who are not in compliance. Signboards and pamphlets outlining the rules will be prominently displayed in and around the temple complex.
The decision has drawn mixed reactions. While many devotees have welcomed the measure, citing the importance of maintaining religious discipline, others have voiced concerns about potential restrictions on personal freedom. In response, the temple committee has clarified that the policy is not intended to exclude anyone, but rather to encourage respectful conduct in a place of worship.
“We are simply requesting visitors to be mindful of the spiritual nature of this temple,” a temple official noted. “This is not about imposing beliefs but about protecting the sacred character of the site.”
With the dress code set to take effect on July 7, temple authorities are urging all visitors to adhere to the guidelines and cooperate with staff to ensure a respectful and seamless experience.
