Indian opener Shubman Gill smashed a sensational double century, guiding India to a commanding total of 514/6 on Day 2 of the ongoing Test match against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The 25-year-old scored a career-best 212 runs off 287 balls, becoming the youngest Indian since Virat Kohli to achieve the milestone.
Gill’s innings, which included 25 fours and 5 sixes, was the backbone of India’s dominant batting performance. He forged crucial partnerships with Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant, the latter adding 88 runs in a rapid-fire 182-run stand. Virat Kohli also contributed a steady 65 before India declared their innings late in the day.
India’s run rate remained above 4 per over for most of the innings, indicating an aggressive yet controlled approach. The Bangladeshi bowling attack, led by Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, struggled to break partnerships on a flat wicket, conceding over 500 runs for the first time in two years.
Social media was abuzz following Gill’s landmark knock, with former cricketers and fans praising his composure and flair. “A knock to remember,” tweeted batting legend Sachin Tendulkar. Sunil Gavaskar hailed it as “a statement from India’s next big star.”
With a mammoth first-innings score, India is now in a commanding position and will look to capitalize with the ball on Day 3. Bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin are expected to lead India’s efforts as they push for an innings victory.
Gill’s double century not only strengthens India’s position in the match but also cements his place among the elite in world cricket.
