In a remarkable gesture of cultural solidarity and diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly received Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar during her visit to India, referring to her as “Bihar ki beti” — the daughter of Bihar. The welcome, marked by the traditional Bhojpuri Chautaal, highlighted the deep-rooted historical ties between India and the Caribbean island nation.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar, whose ancestors migrated from Bihar to Trinidad during the British colonial period as indentured laborers, was honored with cultural traditions from her ancestral land upon her arrival. The Bhojpuri Chautaal, a vibrant folk performance native to Bihar, set the tone for a visit rich in heritage and emotional connection.
Prime Minister Modi’s acknowledgment of Persad-Bissessar’s roots underscored India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen bonds with the global Indian diaspora. Referring to her as “Bihar ki beti” symbolized not only respect for her lineage but also India’s recognition of its extended family across the world.
“This is more than a state visit — it is a homecoming for someone whose ancestors once called this land home,” PM Modi remarked. “India shares a unique connection with the people of Trinidad and Tobago, bound by history, values, and culture.”
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in sectors such as education, renewable energy, digital innovation, and cultural preservation. A special emphasis was placed on initiatives to promote the Bhojpuri language, support diaspora youth programs, and facilitate academic exchanges.
Persad-Bissessar expressed her deep appreciation for the warm reception and cultural tribute. “Being welcomed as a daughter of Bihar is profoundly moving. My visit here reaffirms the importance of shared heritage and the value of preserving our ancestral traditions,” she stated.
The visit also included discussions on global development priorities, collaboration in climate resilience, and mutual support in multilateral forums.
