5 July, 2025-In a strong statement that has stirred political and public discourse in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader and former minister Yogesh Kadam has warned that any disrespect toward the Marathi language will invite legal consequences. His remarks, delivered during a public address on Wednesday, reflect the party’s renewed focus on regional identity and linguistic pride amid ongoing debates over language policies in the state.
Kadam emphasized that Marathi is not just a language but a vital part of Maharashtra’s cultural and historical identity. “Any insult or deliberate neglect of Marathi will not be tolerated. If necessary, legal action will be taken against those who undermine the dignity of our mother tongue,” he declared, addressing a crowd of party workers and local residents.
The warning comes in the backdrop of recent controversies involving alleged sidelining of Marathi in official communication and signage, especially in urban centers like Mumbai and Pune. The Shiv Sena, known for its long-standing advocacy of Marathi pride, has consistently opposed such trends, citing constitutional provisions and state policies that give Marathi the status of the official language in Maharashtra.
Kadam also urged the state government to take proactive measures in enforcing the use of Marathi in all government departments, educational institutions, and public signage. He reiterated the importance of fully implementing the Maharashtra Official Language Act, which mandates the use of Marathi in administrative affairs.
“We are not against any language. But Maharashtra’s official language must be respected in practice, not just in law,” Kadam asserted. His statement was met with applause from attendees and quickly gained traction across political circles and social media platforms.
The issue of language use has been a politically sensitive one in the state, particularly as Maharashtra continues to attract a diverse population from across the country. While many advocate for multilingual inclusivity, regional parties like the Shiv Sena maintain that Marathi must remain central to the state’s administrative and cultural functioning.
Legal experts note that while freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution, state laws and policies can mandate the use of official languages in certain contexts. Violations, if proven intentional or discriminatory, could potentially lead to administrative or legal consequences.
Opposition parties have criticized Kadam’s tone, calling it confrontational. However, Shiv Sena leaders defended his remarks, arguing that legal deterrents are necessary to protect linguistic heritage and ensure compliance with state laws.
As the debate over language rights and policies intensifies in Maharashtra, Kadam’s warning has added fresh momentum to the Shiv Sena’s campaign to reinforce the role of Marathi in public life.
