7 July, 2025-A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly attempting to vandalise a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Pune, triggering outrage and protests from local political groups, including the Congress party. The incident occurred in the early hours near a public square where the iconic statue stands, drawing swift attention from authorities and citizens alike.
According to police officials, the accused approached the statue with an iron rod and began striking its base. Alerted by passersby, local law enforcement reached the scene promptly and apprehended the individual before significant damage could be inflicted. He has been taken into custody and charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to defacement of public property and inciting public disorder.
The identity of the accused has not been officially disclosed, but preliminary investigations suggest that he may have acted alone. Police are currently investigating his motive and any possible links to political or extremist groups. CCTV footage from nearby establishments is also being reviewed to ascertain the timeline of events and ensure there were no accomplices.
Shortly after the incident, members of the Congress party assembled near the statue to stage a protest, condemning the act as a deliberate attempt to insult the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Holding placards and chanting slogans, the protestors demanded stringent legal action against the accused and heightened security for national monuments.
“This is not just an attack on a statue but an assault on the ideals of peace, non-violence, and unity that Mahatma Gandhi stood for,” said a senior Congress leader while addressing the protest. “We will not tolerate such acts of disrespect toward the Father of the Nation.”
Local residents, too, expressed anger and disappointment. Several individuals laid flowers at the foot of the statue later in the day, as a mark of solidarity and respect. Many emphasized the need for stronger surveillance and awareness to prevent such incidents from recurring.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has assured the public that the statue will be inspected for damage and restored, if necessary. Additional security personnel have also been deployed in the vicinity to prevent any further untoward incidents.
This act of vandalism comes amid a larger national conversation about safeguarding symbols of India’s heritage and democratic values. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm while assuring swift and transparent legal proceedings.
As investigations continue, public figures and political parties are expected to visit the site, reaffirming their commitment to preserving the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi in both spirit and symbolism.
