Mumbai’s Lake Reserves Reach 71% Capacity; Modak Sagar and Middle Vaitarna Near Full

BMC water supply update

8 July, 2025-Water levels in Mumbai’s major lakes have surged to 71.18% of their total capacity, according to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday at 6 a.m. The combined stock across the seven reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city now stands at approximately 10,30,218 million litres, providing significant relief amid the ongoing monsoon season.

The increase in water reserves comes after consistent and widespread rainfall across the lakes’ catchment areas in recent weeks. Among the key reservoirs, Modak Sagar and Middle Vaitarna are nearing full capacity, currently holding 95% and 92% of their respective limits.

The seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai—Modak Sagar, Tansa, Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tulsi, and Vihar—have a collective full capacity of around 14.47 lakh million litres. By October 1 each year, the city requires this level of storage to ensure uninterrupted water supply for the following 12 months.

In contrast to early June, when lake levels hovered below 10% due to a delayed monsoon onset, the latest figures mark a sharp and welcome improvement. The sharp rise has reduced the likelihood of water cuts, which are often implemented when stocks fall short during the initial monsoon weeks.

Bhatsa Lake, which contributes nearly half of the city’s water supply, has reached 64% of its capacity. Tansa, another crucial source, stands at 67%. Smaller lakes such as Tulsi and Vihar are also witnessing steady inflow, aligning with the seasonal trend of rising water levels in July.

According to BMC officials, if rainfall continues at the current pace, most lakes are expected to reach full capacity well ahead of the October 1 deadline. This would eliminate the need for water rationing measures and secure Mumbai’s water supply for the upcoming year.

The civic body continues to monitor rainfall activity and lake levels daily. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more rainfall in the coming days, water stocks are likely to see further improvement.

Officials have urged citizens to use water judiciously despite the improved situation, emphasizing the importance of conservation to safeguard against unforeseen weather fluctuations.
