India Gains BRICS Support to Host COP33 Climate Summit in 2028

BRICS supports India

9 July, 2025-India has secured the official backing of BRICS nations for its proposal to host the 33rd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP33) in 2028. The development was confirmed during the recent BRICS ministerial meeting, where all five member states—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—unanimously supported India’s bid.

The endorsement is seen as a major diplomatic success for India, reinforcing its growing role in global climate governance. With BRICS representing a significant portion of the world’s population and greenhouse gas emissions, their collective support is expected to strengthen India’s candidature when the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) reviews potential hosts for upcoming COP summits.

India’s climate efforts have gained international recognition in recent years. Initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and its revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) reflect the country’s commitment to sustainable development. BRICS members acknowledged these contributions while extending their support for India’s COP33 proposal.

During the discussions, China highlighted the need for enhanced cooperation among developing nations on environmental issues and welcomed India’s leadership in this space. Brazil also praised India’s initiative, calling it a timely effort to bring attention to equitable climate financing and capacity building for the Global South.

Should India be selected, COP33 would follow COP31 in Australia (2026) and COP32 in Bulgaria (2027), continuing the tradition of rotating host nations across different regions. Hosting the summit would give India a platform to amplify the voices of developing countries and emphasize climate justice, finance, and technology access.

The Indian government has reportedly begun early preparations, holding consultations with environmental experts, research institutions, and civil society groups. A detailed proposal is expected to be submitted to the UNFCCC in the coming months, ahead of a formal decision expected after COP31.

Experts believe hosting COP33 would offer India an opportunity to showcase its advancements in renewable energy, climate resilience, and sustainable urban development. It would also foster international partnerships and encourage increased investments in green technology and infrastructure.

As the world prepares for COP30 in Brazil later this year, India is likely to intensify its diplomatic outreach to build broader consensus around its bid. With BRICS’ full support now secured, India is emerging as a strong contender to host one of the most significant climate conferences in the years ahead.
