Dassault Confirms Rafale Jet Loss Due to Technical Glitch During Operation Sindoor

Rafale crash

9 July, 2025-Dassault Aviation has confirmed that the Rafale fighter jet lost during Operation Sindoor was due to a technical malfunction. The announcement comes after a detailed joint investigation conducted by Dassault and the Indian Air Force (IAF), ruling out pilot error or hostile engagement.

The incident occurred during a high-risk mission as part of Operation Sindoor, which involved multiple aerial assets deployed for strategic surveillance and tactical operations near sensitive zones. The affected aircraft experienced a critical flight control failure mid-air, forcing the pilot to eject. The pilot was safely rescued and is reported to be in stable condition.

In an official statement, Dassault Aviation stated, “Our preliminary findings confirm a flight control system anomaly as the cause of the failure. We are working in close coordination with IAF engineers to ensure comprehensive diagnostics and preventive measures.”

Operation Sindoor is part of India’s intensified air activity in response to recent escalations and increased security monitoring across its borders. The Rafale, known for its advanced avionics, electronic warfare systems, and precision strike capabilities, has been a key asset in the IAF’s strategic fleet since its induction in 2020.

This is the first such incident involving a Rafale under operational conditions in India. Following the mishap, the IAF initiated a temporary grounding of a section of its Rafale fleet for safety inspections and software upgrades. A senior IAF official confirmed that fleet-wide technical checks are currently underway and that operational readiness remains unaffected.

Defence analysts have noted that technical issues, although rare, are not uncommon in advanced fighter platforms operating under extreme conditions. The IAF has assured that corrective measures are being implemented and that confidence in the Rafale platform remains intact.

Despite the incident, the Ministry of Defence is expected to move forward with additional Rafale acquisitions under the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) programme. Negotiations for the next phase of procurement are reportedly in their final stages.

The transparency shown by Dassault and the swift response by the IAF have been commended by defence experts, who underline the importance of continuous technological audits and robust safety protocols in modern air combat operations.
