10 July, 2025-A Jaguar fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed during a routine training mission in Rajasthan’s Churu district on Tuesday, resulting in the death of the pilot and a civilian. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the ageing Jaguar fleet still in active service.
According to official reports, the aircraft had taken off for a standard sortie when it reportedly experienced a technical issue mid-flight. The pilot attempted to divert the aircraft to a safer area, but it ultimately crashed in a rural location, leading to a massive fire and significant damage to nearby structures.
The Indian Air Force confirmed that the pilot died on impact. Additionally, a civilian on the ground was also killed due to debris from the crash. Emergency teams arrived swiftly at the crash site to extinguish the fire and secure the area. The IAF has launched a detailed inquiry to determine the exact cause of the crash.
This incident marks another addition to a series of mishaps involving the Jaguar aircraft, which has served in the IAF for over four decades. Initially inducted in the late 1970s, the Jaguar is a twin-engine deep strike fighter known for its ground attack capabilities. While many of these jets have undergone upgrades in recent years, their age continues to be a concern for aviation safety.
Defence analysts have consistently highlighted the need for faster induction of modern combat aircraft to replace older platforms. With newer aircraft such as the Rafale entering service and indigenous jets like the HAL Tejas and AMCA under development, India is working to modernize its air fleet. However, the transition has been slow, and older aircraft like the Jaguar remain operational, often leading to safety challenges.
The loss of the pilot, who was executing a standard training mission, has drawn tributes from across the defence establishment and the public. The IAF expressed its condolences and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring flight safety while continuing with modernization efforts.
The crash has intensified calls for reassessing the operational viability of vintage aircraft and accelerating defence procurement processes. Experts emphasize that continuing to operate decades-old platforms in a high-risk environment increases the likelihood of such unfortunate events.
As the investigation moves forward, authorities are expected to review technical data and maintenance logs to identify any lapses. The outcome of the probe will likely influence future decisions regarding the deployment and retirement of legacy aircraft.
