July 11, 2025 — The number of fatalities in the Vadodara bridge collapse climbed to 19 on Friday after one more injured individual passed away during treatment, authorities confirmed. The Gujarat government has identified a structural failure as the primary reason behind the tragic incident, as per an official statement by State Roads and Buildings Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya.
The collapse occurred late Thursday night on a partially constructed flyover near the Chhani area of Vadodara. The structure, which was part of a major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic on the Vadodara-Ahmedabad route, gave way suddenly, trapping workers and vehicles beneath large slabs of debris.
Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local fire units, and police personnel, were mobilized quickly. Rescue operations extended into the early hours of Friday, with injured victims rushed to nearby hospitals. At least 12 people remain hospitalized, with several reported to be in critical condition.
Minister Bavaliya, during a press briefing, confirmed that an initial technical assessment points to structural instability as the key cause. “A committee of engineering experts has been appointed to carry out a comprehensive investigation. The administration will ensure that those accountable for this failure face appropriate legal action,” he said.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud cracking noise moments before the bridge section collapsed. Many of the victims were workers stationed at the site for overnight construction work. The sudden collapse led to panic in the surrounding areas, as emergency teams worked through the night to clear the debris.
In response to the tragedy, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel extended condolences to the grieving families and announced a financial relief package. The families of the deceased will receive ₹5 lakh as compensation, while those injured will be given ₹50,000 each. The Chief Minister also ordered an immediate review of all ongoing infrastructure projects to ensure strict compliance with safety standards.
Local authorities, including the Vadodara Municipal Corporation and the state’s Urban Development Department, have been directed to submit a joint report on the incident within the next 72 hours. Concerns have been raised regarding quality control and supervision mechanisms in large-scale construction projects.
The incident has sparked public and political outrage, with opposition leaders demanding an impartial investigation and greater transparency. Civil engineers and infrastructure experts have called for periodic audits, improved oversight, and stronger accountability in public construction contracts to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As Vadodara grapples with the aftermath of this catastrophic event, the state government faces heightened pressure to ensure that safety protocols are reinforced across all development initiatives.
