July 12,2025 — India’s top steeplechase athlete Avinash Sable failed to finish the men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the Monaco Diamond League on Friday night after suffering a fall during the race.
The 29-year-old, who holds the national record in the event, was seen limping after stumbling over a barrier mid-race. Though he attempted to continue briefly, Sable was forced to pull out before the final laps. His withdrawal came as a shock to Indian athletics fans, especially with the Paris Olympics less than a month away.
Officials from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) confirmed that Sable did not sustain any serious injuries but will undergo a full medical evaluation. “Avinash has been advised rest and observation. Initial reports suggest there’s no major damage, but we are monitoring his condition closely,” an AFI spokesperson said.
Sable, who clocked his personal best of 8:11.20 in 2022, was participating in the Monaco Diamond League as part of his build-up to the Olympics. His performance this season had shown steady improvement, and expectations were high following his silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and consistent showings on the international circuit.
Friday’s mishap has raised concerns regarding his readiness for Paris, with fans and fellow athletes taking to social media to express both worry and support. Many within the athletics community emphasized the importance of a full recovery rather than rushing back into competition.
The Monaco Diamond League is considered one of the most competitive meets globally, drawing elite track and field athletes from around the world. Sable’s participation highlighted his rising profile in international athletics, and his absence from the final results came as a disappointment to many.
While his current Olympic qualification remains unaffected, Sable’s focus will now shift to recovery and regaining form in time for the upcoming Games. Coaches and medical staff are expected to make a decision on his next move after further assessments in the coming days.
Sable’s fall comes amid a crucial phase for Indian athletics, as several athletes are currently finalizing their preparations for Paris 2024. His condition will be closely watched as Team India hopes for a strong showing in track events at the Summer Games.
