Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard has accused senior intelligence officials from the Obama administration of politicising intelligence assessments related to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, sparking a fresh wave of political controversy in Washington.
In a formal statement following a closed-door congressional briefing earlier this week, Gabbard stated that there is “clear evidence” indicating intelligence was selectively interpreted or presented to align with specific political objectives during the final months of the Obama presidency. The accusations are based on recently declassified documents that, according to Gabbard’s office, reveal discrepancies in how intelligence related to foreign interference was handled.
“This is about restoring integrity and transparency within our national security institutions,” Gabbard said. “The American public has the right to know when intelligence is used not to inform but to influence outcomes.”
While she did not directly name individuals, sources within the intelligence community suggest that the focus of the allegations includes former CIA Director John Brennan and former DNI James Clapper—both of whom played central roles in briefing then-President Obama about Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 election.
According to the declassified reports, some assessments were allegedly altered or emphasized to support a predetermined narrative of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives. Gabbard claims that such manipulation compromised the credibility of the intelligence community and influenced public perception ahead of the 2016 vote.
The allegations have sharply divided lawmakers. House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner (R-OH) supported Gabbard’s findings and called for a formal investigation. “This revelation is deeply troubling. If true, it represents a dangerous misuse of national intelligence to achieve political goals,” Turner said.
In contrast, Democrats have condemned the accusations as politically motivated. Former Obama-era officials strongly denied any wrongdoing. “The intelligence community followed strict protocols in its assessments,” said James Clapper. “These allegations are not supported by facts and serve only to erode public confidence in our institutions.”
John Brennan also issued a response, stating, “These claims are irresponsible and part of an ongoing effort to rewrite the history of what was a serious and well-documented foreign interference campaign.”
Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman and 2020 presidential candidate, has gained bipartisan attention for her independent stance on national security and civil liberties. Since her appointment as DNI, she has called for greater oversight and depoliticisation of intelligence operations.
The revelations are expected to prompt renewed scrutiny of how intelligence is collected and shared during election cycles, with several congressional committees preparing to launch inquiries in the coming weeks.
The DNI’s office has confirmed that additional documents related to the 2016 intelligence assessments will be released to the public in the coming months.
