Red Alert in Five Kerala Districts as Monsoon Rains Intensify

Kerala red alert

July 19,2025:
A red alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for five districts in northern Kerala — Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod — as relentless monsoon showers continue to impact the region. The red alert denotes the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204 mm within a 24-hour period.

According to the IMD, the intense precipitation is being driven by active monsoon conditions and a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea. The forecast indicates that rainfall activity is likely to increase further in the coming days, especially across hilly and coastal zones in northern Kerala.

In response to the warning, district administrations have initiated precautionary measures, including the suspension of school and college activities in the affected districts. Local authorities have deployed emergency teams and are keeping a close watch on areas vulnerable to landslides and flash floods. Control rooms have been activated, and residents living in flood-prone zones have been advised to remain on alert.

Preliminary reports indicate waterlogging in several low-lying areas and disruptions in road transport due to fallen trees and minor landslides, particularly in Kozhikode and Wayanad. Officials have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and to follow updates from official sources.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued detailed safety instructions, asking residents to secure essentials, remain indoors during intense rainfall, and report emergencies through helpline numbers. Fishermen have been advised to stay off the sea due to turbulent weather and high wave alerts issued along the coastline.

“All departments have been put on high alert. Relief teams are on standby, and shelters have been prepared in case evacuations are needed,” said a senior KSDMA official. Local bodies have also been tasked with inspecting drainage systems and monitoring landslide-prone zones.

Experts say the changing monsoon behavior, marked by sudden and intense rainfall, is in line with broader patterns of climate variability and warming sea surface temperatures. Environmentalists have called for improved disaster resilience measures, including sustainable land-use planning and better infrastructure in high-risk areas.

As the rains continue, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency instructions to prevent loss of life and property. Updates on weather conditions and further advisories are expected as the situation develops.
