July 21, 2025 — The new integrated terminal building (NITB) at Pune Airport has recorded over 10 million passengers in its first year of operations, according to data released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The milestone was achieved within 12 months of the terminal becoming fully operational on July 14, 2024.
Commissioned to address growing air traffic and passenger demand in the city, the terminal has significantly expanded the airport’s handling capacity. Spread across 50,000 square meters, the facility has enabled smoother passenger flow and enhanced overall travel experience.
Officials from AAI confirmed that the terminal is currently managing an average of 28,000 passengers per day, highlighting Pune’s emergence as a key aviation hub in western India. The surge in passenger traffic also reflects a broader recovery in air travel post-pandemic and the city’s increasing economic and industrial activity.
Designed to handle up to 20 million passengers annually, the NITB features 72 check-in counters, 10 aerobridges, and an automated baggage handling system, aligning it with international standards. The terminal is also equipped with contactless services, automated boarding, and real-time flight information systems to enhance operational efficiency.
Airlines have responded to the expanded capacity by introducing new domestic routes and increasing flight frequencies. Airport authorities are also in talks to expand international connectivity, with proposed services to destinations such as Dubai, Singapore, and Frankfurt under consideration.
In addition to capacity upgrades, the terminal emphasizes sustainability and energy efficiency, incorporating solar power systems, rainwater harvesting, and LED lighting. The interior of the building also showcases Maharashtrian art and architecture, offering travelers a glimpse of local culture.
“The achievement of crossing 10 million passengers within the first year is a testament to the success of the terminal’s design and execution. Pune’s aviation sector is growing rapidly, and this facility is ready to meet future demand,” said a senior AAI official.
Future development plans include the expansion of cargo handling infrastructure, additional parking bays, and improved multimodal connectivity. The Pune Metro Line 3, currently under development, is expected to provide seamless access to the airport once completed.
Pune Airport’s rapid passenger growth reaffirms the city’s role as a vital air traffic node in Maharashtra. With further expansion in the pipeline, the terminal is expected to play a central role in meeting the rising connectivity needs of both domestic and international travelers.
