July 22, 2025 — Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has officially resigned from his post, citing ongoing health complications as the reason. The resignation, submitted earlier today, was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu, and is effective immediately.
An official release from Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed the development, stating that Dhankhar had voluntarily stepped down to prioritize his health following medical advice. The 73-year-old had been facing persistent health challenges in recent months, according to sources familiar with the matter.
“In light of recent medical evaluations and the recommendation of healthcare professionals, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar has decided to relinquish his constitutional responsibilities,” the statement from the Vice President’s Secretariat noted. However, the specific nature of his health concerns has not been disclosed.
Dhankhar, who took office on August 11, 2022, had been serving as the 14th Vice President of India and also functioned as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His tenure was marked by a strong emphasis on parliamentary discipline and constitutional integrity.
His sudden resignation comes amid the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, a crucial period for legislative business. In his capacity as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar played a key role in managing debates, ensuring procedural compliance, and maintaining order during parliamentary proceedings. His departure is expected to temporarily impact the functioning of the Upper House.
Political leaders from across the spectrum responded swiftly to the announcement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support on social media, stating, “Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji served the nation with commitment and honour. I respect his decision and pray for his good health.” Opposition leaders, including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, echoed similar sentiments, commending Dhankhar’s dedication to public service.
Under Article 68 of the Indian Constitution, a new Vice President must be elected within six months of the vacancy. The Election Commission of India is expected to soon initiate the formal process for conducting the election.
Before becoming Vice President, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal and held various positions in legal and political circles. Known for his firm stance on constitutional matters, he often emphasized the importance of ethical conduct and accountability in democratic institutions.
With the Vice President’s office now vacant, political consultations are likely to begin soon regarding potential successors. The upcoming election for the post could also influence the political narrative ahead of the 2026 general elections.
