India to Host FIDE World Cup 2025 After 23 Years; Goa and Ahmedabad Under Review as Venue

FIDE World Cup 2025 India

New Delhi, July 22, 2025 — India is set to host the FIDE World Cup 2025, bringing the global chess spotlight back to the country for the first time since 2002. The tournament will take place from October 30 to November 27, with Goa and Ahmedabad being considered as the venue.

The All India Chess Federation (AICF) confirmed India’s successful bid, describing it as a major boost for the sport. Discussions are ongoing to finalize the host city, with both contenders offering distinct advantages. Goa is known for its tourism appeal and international accessibility, while Ahmedabad offers robust sports infrastructure and organizational experience.

“This is a proud moment for Indian chess. Hosting the World Cup will energize the sport across all levels and showcase India’s role in global chess,” said AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan.

The FIDE World Cup features a knockout format and is a key qualifier for the Candidates Tournament, which determines the next challenger for the World Chess Championship title. Over 200 players from around the world are expected to compete, making it one of the most anticipated events in the international chess calendar.

India’s growing stature in global chess, driven by young stars like R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh, and Arjun Erigaisi, has helped create momentum for hosting major events. The successful staging of the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai in 2022 further demonstrated India’s capability to manage international tournaments.

The tournament is also expected to deliver economic benefits to the host city through increased tourism, media coverage, and hospitality demand. AICF officials stated that the final selection will be based on logistical readiness, facilities, and support from local authorities.

The confirmed host city is likely to be announced within the next few weeks. Regardless of the location, the event is expected to mark a significant milestone for Indian chess and strengthen the country’s position on the global stage.
