July 22, 2025 — India and the Maldives are currently engaged in high-level negotiations to establish a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) alongside an investment pact designed to strengthen economic ties between the two countries. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced these developments in a recent press conference, emphasizing the strategic significance of this cooperation. The proposed agreements aim to enhance collaboration in key sectors including renewable energy and fisheries.

Simultaneously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing for a diplomatic tour beginning July 23, with the United Kingdom as his first destination. The visit’s central focus is to officially sign the long-anticipated India-UK Free Trade Agreement, marking a pivotal advancement in bilateral relations. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will accompany the Prime Minister during this important visit.

The India-UK FTA, which has been under negotiation for more than three years, is approaching its final stages with legal reviews in progress. This trade deal is expected to facilitate greater exchange of goods and services by reducing tariffs, stimulate investment flows, and strengthen business ties between India and the UK. Leaders from both countries have reaffirmed their dedication to deepening this partnership, highlighting its strategic value.

Following the UK visit, PM Modi will travel to the Maldives on July 25, where he will be the Chief Guest at the nation’s 60th National Day celebrations. This visit symbolizes India’s commitment to bolstering regional cooperation and diplomatic relations with the Maldives.

These concurrent efforts with the Maldives and the UK underscore India’s forward-looking strategy to expand its international economic partnerships and foster sustainable growth through strategic trade and investment agreements.
