July 25,2025: Divya Deshmukh has created history by becoming the first Indian to enter the final of the FIDE Women’s World Cup. The 18-year-old defeated China’s Zhongyi Tan in the semifinal held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
After both classical games ended in draws, Deshmukh secured the win in rapid tiebreakers, showcasing composure and sharp play under pressure. With this result, she also qualifies for the Women’s Candidates Tournament — a key step toward the World Championship.
A native of Nagpur, Deshmukh holds the titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster. Her rise has been steady, with prior international success, including being part of India’s bronze-winning team at the 2022 Chess Olympiad.
She will now face either Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine or Aleksandra Goryachkina of Russia in the final. Both are among the top contenders in global women’s chess.
The All India Chess Federation and leading Indian players have praised Deshmukh’s performance, calling it a major step forward for Indian women in the sport. Her success adds to India’s growing reputation in world chess, especially among youth.
As the country watches closely, Divya Deshmukh stands just one win away from claiming one of the most prestigious titles in women’s chess.
