Israel has announced a daily ten-hour tactical pause in military operations in southern Gaza, aimed at allowing the safe passage of humanitarian aid and providing relief to civilians caught in the ongoing conflict. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the pause will be observed between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. local time, primarily along the humanitarian corridor near the Kerem Shalom crossing.
The decision comes amid increasing international pressure and growing concern over the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The enclave, home to more than two million Palestinians, has suffered extensive damage to its infrastructure, severe shortages of basic necessities, and mass displacement due to months of continuous fighting.
In a statement released on Sunday, the IDF emphasized that the tactical pause is strictly humanitarian in nature and does not constitute a ceasefire or indicate a shift in military strategy. “The purpose of this daily pause is to allow humanitarian aid to flow safely to civilians in need,” the IDF spokesperson said. “Military operations against terrorist elements in Gaza will continue outside of these designated hours.”
The temporary suspension of hostilities is expected to facilitate the entry of food, water, medical supplies, and other essentials through the Kerem Shalom crossing, one of the few active entry points for aid convoys into Gaza. Humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, have welcomed the move but cautioned that much more is needed to address the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned of the deteriorating situation in Gaza, with nearly 80% of the population reportedly displaced and critical infrastructure—such as hospitals, water facilities, and power stations—either destroyed or severely impaired. UN officials have called for unfettered access to all areas of Gaza and the protection of aid workers operating in conflict zones.
International response to Israel’s announcement has been mixed. While the United States and European Union acknowledged the tactical pause as a positive step, they reiterated calls for a more sustainable and comprehensive humanitarian solution. “A daily pause is helpful, but the people of Gaza need lasting relief,” a senior EU diplomat said. “There must be full respect for international humanitarian law by all parties involved.”
Critics argue that tactical pauses, while beneficial in the short term, are often insufficient to guarantee the delivery of aid at the scale required. They have urged both Israeli authorities and Palestinian armed groups to engage in broader negotiations that prioritize civilian protection and long-term stability.
As the situation in Gaza remains fragile, the implementation and monitoring of the tactical pause will be closely watched by global observers. Whether this measure will lead to improved humanitarian access or pave the way for more sustained de-escalation efforts remains uncertain.
