July 30, 2025:Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the installation of statues honoring two of Tamil Nadu’s most revered historical figures—Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I. The announcement was made during his visit to the Aadi Thiruvathirai celebrations held at the ancient temple site of Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the enduring contributions of the Chola emperors to Indian civilization, particularly in the fields of governance, temple architecture, maritime expansion, and cultural outreach. He stated that the planned statues would serve as lasting tributes to their vision and leadership, while also deepening national respect for Tamil heritage.
Rajaraja Chola I, known for constructing the grand temple at Thanjavur, laid the foundation of a powerful dynasty that reached its zenith under his son, Rajendra Chola I. The latter’s reign marked a period of extensive naval expeditions, including campaigns that expanded Indian influence across parts of Southeast Asia.
Modi’s announcement included the release of a special commemorative coin in honor of Rajendra Chola I, underscoring the significance of his contributions to India’s historical and cultural narrative. The event was attended by religious leaders, cultural historians, and a large number of local citizens who had gathered to celebrate the temple festival.
The government plans to install the statues near Gangaikonda Cholapuram, a site built by Rajendra Chola to mark his victorious expeditions. Officials have indicated that the project will be guided by a panel of heritage experts to ensure historical authenticity and cultural sensitivity.
The announcement has been welcomed by scholars and cultural organizations across Tamil Nadu. Many see it as a long-overdue gesture that recognizes the far-reaching impact of the Chola dynasty, not just in the region but across much of the Indian Ocean world.
In addition to the statue initiative, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s efforts to recover ancient artifacts taken from Indian temples and promised increased support for the preservation of heritage sites. He also emphasized the importance of connecting younger generations with India’s civilizational roots through such cultural projects.
The event, held during a major religious festival, is seen by analysts as a significant move that reinforces national unity while celebrating regional pride. With Tamil Nadu preparing for upcoming elections, the cultural emphasis of the announcement has drawn attention from political observers.
Closing his remarks, Prime Minister Modi said the Chola emperors embodied values that continue to inspire India’s development and global engagement today. He called upon the nation to take pride in its ancient traditions and to ensure they are preserved and promoted for generations to come.
